Symptoms of Arteriovenous Malformation

In this article, you will learn about symptoms of an arteriovenous malformation. An arteriovenous malformation is basically an abnormal tangle of blood vessels connecting to the arteries and veins.

It disrupts the normal flow of blood and oxygen circulation to the parts of the body. Arteries are mainly responsible for taking oxygen-rich blood from heart to the brain where veins carry less oxygen blood from the brain and give back to the heart.

When it occurs, a tangle of blood vessels in the brain directly diverts blood from the arteries to the veins.

Arteriovenous malformation can develop to be any part of the body. It occurs mostly in the brain or spine. The basic cause of AVM s is not clear.

Arteriovenous malformation is basically a genetic disorder. Once it can be diagnosed, it can be treated successfully to prevent or reduce its several complications.

Most arteriovenous malformation can’t grow much, although the vessels involve much widen.  Arteriovenous malformation mostly shrinks due to clotting in the most part of the AVM while some enlarge to redirect the blood in the adjacent blood vessels.

Symptoms of Arteriovenous Malformation

-More then 50 percent who affect with arteriovenous malformation is to have an intracranial hemorrhage.

-Mostly patients of arteriovenous malformation patients have to be focal or generalized seizures.

-Patients who have restricted pain in the head is basically due to extreme blood flow around a brain.

-Most patients have the problems with movement, speech and normal vision of the eyes.

Mainly symptoms of AVM is depending on the size and location of the blood vessels. Its common symptoms are :

– Excessive bleeding in the brain which is commonly called to be a subarachnoid hemorrhage.

-A sudden headache in the brain

-Focal neurologic inadequacy such as tingling in one side of body, weakness, paralysis etc.

-Creep to one side of the body.

Some researchers believe that it can be a cause of indirect learning or some behavioral disorders. The major complication of AVM is sudden bleeding in the brain which results in a stroke.

Damage of AVM is to build -up over the time. In women, pregnancy can sometimes cause symptoms due to increased blood pressure and blood volume.

AVM typically remain to be stable.  Sometimes arteriovenous malformation may not be developed any symptoms and it may be discovered during the treatment of other disorders.

AVM is the major cause of a hemorrhagic stroke.

Treatment of an Arteriovenous Malformation

1. Embolization

In arteriovenous malformation, a small catheter is injected into the brain vessels and then into the AVM.  A liquid is injected into the blood vessels which block the arteriovenous malformation.

There is a little risk in this procedure and chance of complete cure using this technique.

2. Radiation Treatment

It is also known as radiosurgery. the narrow x-ray beam is focused on the AVM.

This radiation causes the AVM to burn up. Risk of complication is very low in this treatment and can be performed in the small size of an arteriovenous malformation.

Well, this was the end of the article of symptoms of an arteriovenous malformation.

By proper management of high blood pressure and regular appointment with a neurologist help to prevent any other complications.
